April 6th, 1843
On April of 1843, Joseph Smith was inquiring of the Lord as to the date of the coming of the Son of Man. The following is what Joseph Smith actually recorded in his own diary (journal) on that day:
"There are those of the rising generation who shall not taste death until Christ comes. I was once praying earnestly upon the subject, and a Voice said unto me, My son, if thou livest until thou art 85 years of age, thou shalt see the Face of the Son of Man. I was left to draw my own conclusions concerning this and took the liberty to conclude that if I did live till that time He would make His appearance or I shall go where He is. I prophesy in the name of the Lord God and let it be written, that the Son of Man will not come in the heavens till I am 85 years old, 48 years from now or about 1890." (Diary of Joseph Smith, April 6, 1843)The text underlined is what Joseph Smith believed, that children living in 1843 would still be alive when Christ came.
The text in bold is a direct prophecy! It cannot be "explained away" as "personal opinion"! It is a direct prophecy pointing to the year 1891 (about 1890). Joseph Smith would be 85 years of age only for a few days in 1890, but for the entire year of 1891 save a few days. Joseph's note "48 years from now" means 1891. 1843 + 48 years = 1891. This is Joseph Smith's second 1891 prophecy!
The next page will show that Mormon leaders expected Jesus to return in the year 1891; they were absolutely sure of it! However, when the year came and went, and no red-robed Jesus appeared in the skies, the Church has, since then, simply ignored the 1891, and Mormon apologists (defenders of the Faith) have tried to "explain away" the 1891 prophecies of Joseph Smith by saying:
"Oh! These were not prophecies at all, just personal opinions!""Well, sure, these were prophecies, but the Lord would have come in 1891, but we weren't ready to receive Him, so the Lord delayed His coming!
How many failed prophecies can a true Prophet give anyway?
If you are a faithful Mormon, one who follows "The Brethren" (Mormon leaders), then you MUST believe that Joseph Smith's 1891 prophecies (given on February 14th 1835 and again on April 6th 1843) both utterly FAILED!
But....we believe that these prophecies DID NOT FAIL, but were absolutely and truly FULFILLED!
